Which hair extension method is the best? This question doesn’t have one solid answer. Each method has its pros and cons. Nowadays tape extensions are growing in popularity. This is a cold extension method – with the right set of professional hands this method doesn’t damage hair at all. The second most popular method is hair extension by keratin micro capsules. You can check out both methods in real life on a mannequin at the Mella salon. We should add that you need to know the method you want to use on your hair prior to booking the appointment because each method takes different times to do (the tape extensions need 1 hour while the capsules can take up to 3 hours).

Which technique is best suited for my hair type? The most cost effective are tape extensions because this technique can be done repeatedly without losing hair length and volume. Tape and sew-in extensions are the most friendly to your hair structure because these are cold extension methods (no heat is used during the extension process, besides taking the extensions out is also easy and doesn’t do any damage).

Can hair extensions be dyed? It’s not recommended – you should rather choose extensions close to your current hair colour. If necessary hair extensions can be dyed darker but in no circumstance can they be bleached or lightened. Extensions can be toned, but you have to keep in mind that it is your own responsibility. The extensions can react to hair dyes in different ways since they differ in structure therefore the seller can’t guarantee the outcome and doesn’t take responsibility for any changes done to the product by the consumer.

Can hair extensions be bleached? Certainly not.

How long will the extensions last? That very much depends on hair care – what cosmetics you use and how often you use heat on your hair. Blonde hair extensions, depending on the manufacturer and class, usually last up to 6 months. Brown and dark hair lasts 6-12 months on average. Important – we recommend not using curling irons since it can cause irreversible damage to the extensions.

Will my hair suffer damage after the hair extensions are removed? If you take care of the hair and use professional help to remove the extensions, your natural hair will not be harmed. The extension process has to be done professionally and choosing the best technique suitable for you.

How long does the hair extension procedure take? It depends on the chosen extension technique. Hair extension for semi long and semi thick hair with US-TAPE technology will need 1 hour, with keratin capsules – 2 to 3 hours, while sewn-in extensions will require up to 2 hours of your precious time.

Why do I have to use special hair products? Since the hair extensions undergo heavy chemical treatment their structure can be damaged and dry. This hair needs professional moisturising products on a daily basis. You should also use smoothing serums for the ends and heat protection products for styling.

Can I wash my extensions every day? You won’t have to. Your hairdresser will show you ways you can wash the hair every other day (washing just the top of your head one day and the whole head the second day).

How to take care of my extensions when going swimming? When swimming in pools, we recommend combing and gathering your hair up in a tight bun. Use a bathing cap if possible and try not to get the hair wet. Chlorine and saltwater can dry up the extensions.

How to take care of my extensions while travelling? Since the care of extensions requires a longer time when washing and drying them, there’s a risk you won’t have this extra time to carry through your daily routine. That’s why we recommend taking the extensions out and choosing clip-in extensions for the travel time since they can be easily taken out and clipped back in whenever necessary.

How to take care of my extensions when going to sauna? Always put a towel around your head – that will prevent heat from damaging the hair extensions.

How to remove hair extensions? Hair extension removal at home by yourself is definitely not recommended. This procedure should be done by a professional who specializes in the particular extension technique.

How to choose the colour of the extensions? The extension colour usually is matched with the colour of the ends of your natural hair because that’s where the hair makes the transition. If you have darker roots and lighter ends, the extensions will be matched with the ends ignoring the colour of the roots.

How to chose the best hair extension length? It can be best done by placing a ruler next to your temple / eyes – this is the approximate height the extensions will be put in.

How to choose the right amount of hair extensions? Your hairdresser will help with this. Hair extension with capsules need approximately 100 strands, tape extensions – 20 pairs (4 cm wide) or 30 pairs (3 cm wide). The sew-in technology needs 1m of extensions (about 100g of hair). If your natural hair is thin, you’ll need a smaller amount of extensions, if thick – a larger amount.

When is hair extension not possible? Hair extension isn’t possible for those who: 1) are undergoing a chemotheraphy course 2) have weak hair roots 3) suffer from severe hair loss that needs treatment.

Do I need a haircut prior to hair extension? No. The hair extension specialist will give you a haircut if needed prior the procedure. To make the extensions invisible you will need a graduated cut. If you have a bob, the ends will have to be thinned to seamlessly blend in the extensions.

How long does my hair have to be to get extensions? The minimal hair length is 8 cm on the back of the head and 12 cm on the top of the head. Bare in mind – the longer and thinner the natural hair, the more unnoticeable the extensions will be.

Can I get hair extensions if I’m under 18? In order to get hair extensions at Mella salon you will need a written or verbal consent from your parents. We recommend clip-in extensions for people under 18 because they don’t require extra care.

Hair extensions don’t need any extra care compared to natural hair. A few weeks in clients usually get the hang of taking care of long and thick hair. Hair extensions need the same amount care as long and thick natural hair.
